Principal

Alexis Hart McDowell is the Principal Attorney of the Law Office of Alexis Hart McDowell, a successful Chicago boutique law firm that advises individuals, entrepreneurs, startups, companies and nonprofits. Alexis has over 10 years of law practice experience including law firm, in-house and solo practitioner settings.  She counsels clients in the areas of Contracts, Corporate Law, Entertainment, Expungement, Sealing, Trademarks, Copyrights, Real Estate, and Nonprofit Formation and Governance.

Previously, Alexis was the Director, Copyrights & Contracts for the American Bar Association where she was counsel to the Publishing Division and was responsible for the protection and exploitation of the ABA’s intellectual property. During her six year tenure at the ABA, Alexis turned around a fledgling licensing program, negotiated and drafted author, distribution, licensing, vendor and sponsorship agreements, and oversaw over a million dollars in annual revenue. Alexis’ was also an Adjunct Professor at DePaul University School of Law where she taught Advanced Legal Writing and Research and an associate at Brown Raysman Millstein Felder and Steiner LLP (subsequently, Thelen LLP) in New York where she handled both litigation and transactional matters pertaining to Intellectual Property, Telecommunications, Internet and Entertainment Law.

Alexis is dedicated to providing Pro Bono legal services and serves as General Counsel to True Star Foundation; handles real estate transactions through The Law Project, and foreclosure mediations through Chicago Volunteer Legal Services; assists with expungement and sealing case filings through the Expungement Summit hosted by the Cook County Clerk of Court; and participated in clemency petition in-take & reviews with the Cabrini Green Legal Aid Clinic. Alexis further serves and empowers her community through the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Job Coaches Ministry at New Life Covenant Church.

Alexis earned her law degree from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York with a certificate in Intellectual Property Law and her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from DePaul University. During her tenure at Cardozo, Alexis participated in the Comparative Media Law & Policy Programme at the University of Oxford in England; was a member of the Cardozo Arts and Entertainment Law Journal and Cardozo’s National Trial Team; and was Founder and President of the Sports & Entertainment Law Students Association.  Alexis was an AIPLA 2002 Intellectual Property Law Scholar and a BESLA scholarship award recipient.  Alexis is admitted to practice in Illinois and New York.
